Weed Mapping Project Begins Soon
Bozeman--This summer, crews will determine the extent of the infestations of two noxious weeds that are new to Gallatin County. Beginning June 19, the weed mapping crews will be searching the area south of Huffine Lane between Gooch Hill Road and South Third Ave.
The Montana Conservation Corps crews will be going door-to-door asking permission to look for and map the location of tall buttercup and orange hawkweed. These crews have been hired by Gallatin County Extension in partnership with the Northern Rocky Mountain Resource Conservation and Development area.
“Your cooperation in this effort is important in identifying the extent of the infestation and developing a treatment strategy to prevent the further spread of these aggressive noxious weeds,” said Ron Carlstrom, Gallatin County Extension agent.
Tall buttercup and orange hawkweed are both category two noxious weeds in Montana. This means the weeds have recently been introduced into the state and are capable of rapid spread and invasion of lands. Tall buttercup was first identified in the county in 2004 while orange hawkweed was first discovered in 2000.
For more information about the project, contact Kara Schile with the Gallatin County Extension office at 406-209-7483 or gallatin2@montana.edu.
